Considerations for Preventing Infections and IncreasingStudent Safety

In an effort to prevent the spread ofthe novel coronavirus, various measures are being taken in order to slow thespeed of increased infections. Among this, schools have been temporarilyclosed, events have been cancelled, a lot of different information is beingpassed around, and the lives of the students as well as the adults around themhave seen various changes.

The children may be worried that they or theirfamily members might become sick, and so it is possible that we will observeirregularities in their behavior. Please takenote that it is important to know that the following behaviors are normal inthese circumstances.

Showing physical symptoms such as stomachaches and headaches, insomnia, loss of appetite
Crying more than usual and not wanting to be apart from adults
Experiencinginfantile regression, such as sudden reversion to childish speech and conduct, wetting the bed, peeing their pants, and being selfish
Re-enacting events that are currently unfolding within theirgames and playtime

How do we relate to children and family that are feelinganxiety and stress?

Understand what their needs and worries are
Direct our attention to children who we believe are in need ofsupport

Help out in ways that make them feel secure and calm

Listen to what they have to say, when they want to say it

Ensure thatessential needs are met (clothing, food, shelter), and maintain daily routinesand habits as much as possible

Maintain a well-regulated life sytle

Find ways toengage in physical activities indoors, even if it is just stretching or doingRadio Taiso (calisthenics)

Help them with getting reliable information

Connect them with public services and social supportassociations

Help themwith becoming able to protect themselves (washing hands, cough-etiquette, moderateexercise etc.)
Please use these tips when relating tochildren or other family members who might be experiencing anxiety, fear, and otherforms of mental stress.
